Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic Care is a health profession dedicated to the treating of spinal and musculoskeletal problems primarily through Chiropractic manipulation.
The Chiropractor engages in non-surgical treatment of disorders of the nervous system and/or musculoskeletal system, without prescription medications.
A Chiropractor does not prescribe medication.
Generally, Chiropractors maintain a unique methodical focus on spinal manipulation and treatment of surrounding structures.
The goal is to provide pain relief, improved function, and mobility; thereby improving a patient’s quality of life.
Chiropractors may apply over 100 different adjustment techniques. Typically, chiropractors will focus on and utilize 8 to 10 different approaches in their practice.
The common goal of most chiropractic techniques is to restore or enhance joint function. Additionally, the Chiropractor will focus on resolving joint inflammation and pain reduction.
Chiropractic Manipulation Techniques
Activator Method Treatment
The “Activator Method” chiropractic technique utilizes a spring-loaded, hand-held mechanical instrument called the Activator adjusting instrument.
This instrument allows a Chiropractor to provide a quick, low-force impulse at specific points.
There are two theoretical advantages of the Activator assisted treatment:
High speed
The instrument is so quick that the body’s muscles are less likely to tense in response, and thereby resist the treatment.
This lack of muscle resistance may facilitate the treatment’s effectiveness.
Controlled force
The applied force is localized and does not put the joint in any compromised positions, such as bending or twisting.
Activator Method Practitioners
The Activator adjusting instrument is approved in Canada for use by licensed health care practitioners.
Most commonly, chiropractors use the “Activator Method” for treating back and/or neck pain.
A selection of 5-6 different chiropractic techniques may be utilized based on a combination of the patient’s condition, preference, and the chiropractor’s preference and experience.
The “Activator method” is typically one of a number of techniques a Chiropractor in Surrey near you, may use.
The Chiropractor will evaluate the patient for signs and symptoms; in order to identify the joints of the spine or the extremities, that may be the source of complaints.
The “Activator Method” chiropractic technique involves multiple steps.
A Central Surrey Chiropractor or other health care professional may use all of the steps or may focus on only using the Activator instrument to adjust the spine.
Typically, a treatment will be done while the patient lies face down on the adjustment platform.
Beginning with the lower back, the treatment progresses toward the head, targeting each vertebral segment individually
The Practitioner will apply the device to the tissues at or near the affected joint.
The initial pressure is followed by a quick thrust from the device, which feels much like a knee reflex test with a small nylon hammer device.
The patient remains still, with no twisting or turning; as there often is for a traditional chiropractic adjustment (high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust).
After an adjustment, the chiropractor will check for signs of improvement, and symptoms associated with the patient’s condition.
The duration of the therapy is dependent on each individual’s case.
Once the patient’s symptoms have improved and clinical signs resolved, the Activator treatment is effectively completed.
The “Activator Method” is considered safe and is used by Chiropractors for the treatment of neck and back pain. Additionally it may be used for pain in the ankles, knees, hip, shoulder, elbows and wrists.
When the Activator Method May Not be Used
As with any spinal manipulation or chiropractic treatment, a careful clinical examination is required to ensure that the Activator method is not performed on a person who has pain being caused by:
- Infection
- Cancer
- Fracture in the treatment area
- Open wound in the treatment area
- Serious Neurological Disorder
These conditions and other problems may potentially be exacerbated using the Activator Method.
When performed by a qualified medical professional, on an appropriately selected patient, the “Activator Method” is relatively safe.
Some patients may experience discomfort or stiffness following the initial treatment.
Before agreeing to have the Activator Method Treatment, the Dr. will discuss with you the potential benefits and risks.
